Common Questions
Get Informed
In The Paths of Janus, we want to give you the best D&D experience possible. That’s why we’ve included a compilation of frequently asked questions. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, reach out and we’ll try to provide the answer.

I’m a beginner –– is that okay?
Absolutely! D&D is, at it's heart, story-telling. I guarantee you've told a story: the fun dinner, the awful math class, the surprise birthday party for your best friend.

I (and we, as a party) will help you with the details. I am happy to meet with you in the run-up to and during the campaign and/or provide links to great videos / articles that explain the core of D&D.

New players are often my favorite because they don't know what they can't do. This breeds creativity and out of the box ideas. It's my job as the DM to help walk back ideas that maybe don't work. I'm a fan of the acting concepts of "yes, and" and "no, but". If I have to tell you that you can't do the idea that you just had (for whatever reason), I'll do my best to pitch a parallel thought that would work!

Do you have Homebrew Rules?
I do! Here are the rules I use (some are mine, others are more widely used concepts from Reddit / similar places)

Roll for Stats: You are welcome to use point buy or standard array, but I encourage rolling for stats. When you do you get to re-roll 1s once per die per stat. Example: I roll a 6 / 4 / 1 / 1 initially. I then re-roll the two 1s and get a 3 and a 1. I have to keep the second 1 because I "confirmed it" by rolling it twice. You then drop the lowest number (in this case that "confirmed" 1) and keep the rest (6 / 4 / 3). You do so for each stat and add up your totals pre-racial bonuses. If that total is 75+ you keep it. If it is 74- you re-roll all stats! I like powerful PCs because that allows me to use fun and challenging (and sometimes homebrewed) monsters! You are allowed to place the dice totals in any stat you would like. You do not need to do stats in the "stat order"

Flanking: When you and an ally are on directly opposite sides of a monster you each have advantage on melee attacks. This applies to both your party and your foes

Potion Drinking: In the official rules, drinking a potion is a full action. In my games drinking a potion (for yourself) is only a bonus action. Administering it to someone else is still a full action

Power-Leveling: At level 1 you get a free feat. At levels 4 / 8 / 12 / 16 / 19 you get an additional free feat (once at each of those levels). Feats are super fun and can lead to interesting character development and story-lines

How often do we play / how long do sessions take? What size groups do you run?
I run groups anywhere from 3 players to 6 players. Less than 3 doesn't flow well and can get stuck in situations easily. Larger than 6 diminishes the time that the players have in and out of combat.

We'll aim for every other week and most of my games are 3-4 hours. Some boss fights are 5.
